Name: Jannette L. Cabardo
Job Title: Data / Database Analyst – Lead
How long have you worked at TRUSTe? Almost 3 years
Tell us about your role at TRUSTe. When I started, my role was to maintain TRUSTe’s tracker metadata. It started as a one-man team. Initially, I mined, evaluated and rated trackers to determine who those entities were, their behaviors and their risks in order to assess companies’ OBA privacy practices. The Tracker Database, which holds the tracker metadata, is now integrated into TRUSTe’s Website Monitoring solution, which enables companies to see what trackers are active on their websites. This tool helps identify possible data leakage.
Why did you get CIPT certified? Being CIPT certified equips me with the knowledge to make sound decisions about privacy issues. I find having a CIPT certification is very useful in my career at TRUSTe. During the training and review, I gained so much knowledge on how to deal with privacy, specifically in the field of information technology. It is a very good foundation since technology is constantly changing.
What are some hot issues in the privacy space right now? One of the hottest issues is the use of “big data.” Is there enough legislation for its use? It is difficult to formulate a standard set of ethics around big data. It is deemed important for businesses, legislators and consumers to agree and set rules regarding the privacy and ownership. Also, some organizations lack transparency about what they do with the data they collect. Is it being processed and shared with other entities? It is important that major ethical issues regarding big data be answered.
What do you like most about working at TRUSTe? Working at TRUSTe alongside talented people, serves as an avenue to bring out the best in you. You need to think of new processes and implement them. Also, I’m very conscientious of privacy issues and have learned more about how I can protect my own information.
What do you do for fun when you’re not working? Bonding with my family! On the weekends, my family and I enjoy going to the beach.
