How this new initiative impacts you and your customers.
In late 2020 an initiative to help keep consumer’s information safe and secure gained momentum among many large organizations around the world. This initiative is known as Global Privacy Control, or GPC for short.
GPC allows consumers an easy way to opt-out of organizations selling or sharing their personal information under specific privacy laws. The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) have led the change in the industry and brought privacy rights back to the consumer. Essentially, consumers will be able to control these settings within their web browsers. This will act as a system that websites can use to demonstrate that they support GPC.
A growing number of organizations, both web browser and browser plug-in providers, have adopted the GPC and allow consumers to enable the signal if they would like. Websites should detect and honor this signal as a ‘do not sell or share’ setting, and voila – the consumer’s information is safe and secure.
Xavier Beccera, the former California Attorney General, has referenced the GPC regarding CCPA.
Colorado just recently passed the Consumer Privacy Act, which also requires honoring browser settings and opt-out controls. There is no sign of these acts slowing down, and they continue to be passed in the US and around the world (which is great news for privacy).
How can you stay on top of these ever-changing laws and regulations in regards to the GPC? The easiest way is to implement a software that allows for GPC detection – TrustArcs Cookie Consent Manager allows this setting to be enabled. Cookie Consent Manager will continue to expand this functionality with GPC over the coming months. If you’re already using the TurstArc Cookie Consent Manager solution, you can activate this now (if you haven’t already). If you aren’t using our solution and would like to learn more about it and how it can support GPC and you – click below now.
